Lake Trichonida, amazing in beauty, and in addition, still unknown, is located in the center of the Aetolian plateau. We are talking about the largest lake in Greece, which is one of the most significant wetlands with great aesthetic, ecological and fishing significance. Here, in vast reed beds and in the lakeside strip, more than 140 species of birds live, 30 of which are endangered; in the lowland coastal zone are calcareous swamps, which cause special scientific interest. Centuries-old plane trees, willows, oleanders, alder trees and eucalyptus trees, as well as plantations of olive and citrus trees – all together – make up a landscape of exceptional natural beauty. In spring, wild orchids, cyclamens and gladioli bloom here, spreading an intoxicating scent everywhere, while whole “floating meadows” of white water lilies adorn the blue lake surface. Lake Trichonida is also distinguished by its rich ichthyofauna, with rare species of freshwater fish (gurnar, nanobygus, eel, etc.) and delicious lake smelt – gastronomic know-how in the taverns of this region. At sunset, when the sun, saturated with the magic of the day, is imperceptibly hiding in its kingdom, the light lit in small villages, like dozens of luminous fireflies, scatters the calm expanse of the lake, reflected by playful sparkles on the surface of the water.
